Too Big to Prosecute

Why is it when a person of low stature in the community (be they white, black, whatever,) commits a crime, they are caught , brought to trial, and, if found guilty, receive a punishment (supposedly) to fit the crime. Yet when a BIG PLAYER or person/legal entity breaks the law many times they are not even sought for the actions they took?

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of stealing secrets and executed for their deeds. Who were they? Were they in the news regularly? Were they high profile, well-known, leaders in the country? No! They were just two government employees. Hardly anyone knew them before their high-profile case and ultimate executions.

Willie Sutton, an imprisoned bank robber, was asked, “why do you rob banks”?

“Because that’s where the money is,” was his reply.

Before his crimes and his quote became popular in the 1930s, Sutton was just a young Irish-American trying to get by. Apparently he did quite well. He reportedly stole over $2 million during his life of crime. The second half of his life, though, he spent in jail, and deservedly so.

A young black girl is pulled over for an improper lane change while driving and less than 3 days later found dead, in a jail cell all the while in POLICE CUSTODY. Wouldn’t you think you were safe while in the hands of the law? Remember your parents telling you if you are ever in danger find a policeman; you can trust them?

The list goes on and on. Today some of the criminal nobodys aren’t even arrest, just shot!

A young man is walking past (not at or away, just past) a policeman and is shot 16 times; 15 times while he is on the ground.

A 12-year-old boy playing around with a BB gun is shot and killed less than 30 seconds after the police arrive. Oh Boy! I’ll bet he was a big threat; I’m sure those policemen feared for their lives, especially considering video of the scene showing the youth simply standing there as they drove up. He was only twelve-years-old, two years younger than my grandson, who I think would have had a similar demeanor and body language, which said to me, “What’s going on? Why are they here? What did I do?” And, then silence FOREVER!

Then there are those BIG PEOPLE; too big to prosecute.

Take Nixon for example. Forced to resign the Presidency, Gerald Ford took over and pardoned Nixon saying he wanted to end the division in the country and get back to work on our problems.

Well, I contend Nixon and people like Nixon are this country’s problems. We need to focus on corruption and illegal activity wherever it exists, not just on the little guy. Of course, the big guys don’t want to come down heavy on another big guy because they themselves may find their actions open to question.

The Bush Administration, regardless of your party affiliation, has been accused of lying about the war that cost us:

  • 10 years

  • 4000+ military lives (US military only)…. .

  • Hundreds of thousands of Iraq citizen’s lives (I hold that they are no different than you or I… just trying to live their lives within their society and beliefs, raise and love their family members as we love our family members and neighbors)

  • And what? $1 trillion? $2 trillion? (Oh, that’s right, we’ll get that back from the sale of their oil - of which Haliburton will take their cut.)

Where is the investigation? Where are the arrest warrants? Where is the Attorney General? Why did the Obama Administration skip over the proof that the Bush Administration voluntarily lied and deceived the American people just to get a war? Why did no one follow the case through to prosecution? Why was Clinton up for impeachement for a stained dress, when Bush literally got away with murder?

Maybe no one will want to be President if the President held accountable. But why? Why shouldn’t the President and his administration be held responsible to uphold the law? Why should they be excused from being held responsible for their lies and twisted truths that caused so much loss of life and property? (I believe we can all agree it’s an oily situation, huh?)

Now I don’t mean to just pick on the Presidency. What a about the “too big to fail” bankers, or the Wall Street insider trading schemes, or the credit card industry, or the companies that break international laws?

I suppose the last best example is the 2008 real estate bust that sent the world economy to its knees. The backlask from that has been felt by all, lessor degrees for some, bankruptcy for others. Are there any bankers in jail? Are there any on trial? Are there any under suspicion of wrong doing? Are any under indictment? We all know what and how it happened. We all know of the wrong doings and the illegal activities. We all know that their activities are morally wrong as well and not for the good of our fellow citizens and country.

‘Think’ for a moment of other corporate illegal activities that you are aware of; and ‘wonder’ how many many more criminal activities we have no idea are being perpetrated on us AT THIS VERY MOMENT.

Let’s not forget, Congress!

Men and women who run for office, often unscrupulously, do unconscionable things when in office and have never been brought up on charges. Illegal use of campaign funds, selling their vote for donations, lying to constituents, taking illegal donations, and on and on. Some even have the gall to run for President (Remember Newt lying to a congressional committee?). And how many SHOULD be investiagated, caught, tried, and if convicted what happens? (The courts probably don’t have punishments outlined for these offenses.)

Governor Snyder of Michican displaced the elected officials with a person that answered only to Snyder himself. (What could go wrong? Ever wonder why the founding fathers wanted elections so one person couldn’t decide for the populous what was best for them?) The end result: tainted lead water to the inhabitatns of Flint and the selling of precious irreplacable art owned by the City of Detroit. Any arrests, any inquiries, and impeachment? We’ll see!

Why do we tolerate dishonestly in our politicians? Why do we not hold them to as high a standard as we hold our lessor known neighbors and fellow citizens. Why is lying cheating, underhanded dealings, back room deals not found appalling to us? Is this just “Business as Usual” thus acceptable?

Let’s face it, a person smoking grass or even using cocaine is far less dangerous to the population than a corrupt politician selling their vote to their highest campaign donor or a corporate over-paid big-wig whose business dealing bring higher costs, financial suffering, and loss to many. Why do we incarcerate more people than any other county in the world, for seeminly unimportant crimes. (Many are inprisioned for using pot, a substance far less dangerous to the population than alcohol)

I’m feeling ill, just thinking about this.

You too? Sit down, have some water, take 2 aspirin and call me in the morning! (Country doctor advise from long ago.)

Then, let me know your thoughts. What solutions do you see possible? What inroads can we make?
